Aussie Icon Louis Tillett Passes Away at 64

It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Louis Tillett. A giant of the Australian underground music scene in 70s, 80s and 90s, it was in Europe where Louis found acclaim and notoriety as the Rockpoet der Nacht. To quote his long-term partner Rachael Slattery, ‘He brought joy to our pain, light to our darkness, and a good dose of mischief.

Louis’ impressive career has seen him invited to collaborate with Leonard Cohen and Brian Eno, and work with Charlie Owen, Ed Kuepper, Tex Perkins, Don Walker and Brett Myers. Nick Cave called him “a pioneer that has been an inspiration to many of us”. Often the subject of urban music myth, his live and recorded performances have inspired and informed Kurt Cobain, The Flaming Lips and The White Stripes.

In February of this year, the Sydney Wise Office was honoured to host a showcase for Louis where he played a selection of his mesmerising catalogue to admirers in the industry, friends and loved ones.

Wise Music remembers and honours an uncompromising artist, wordsmith and true punk. A man who loved his boat. A man who brought a child-like curiosity to the world.  We extend our deepest condolences to Rachael, Jack and all who knew and loved him.
