Sofi Paez

Sofi Paez is a pianist and composer born in San José, Costa Rica. She experiments with piano, voice and electronic elements in search for new ways of expression in her roots, using both the Spanish and English language. 

Sofi's pieces are often inspired by daily life and the nature that surrounds her. In 2023 Sofi garnered widespread interest upon releasing her EP ‘Circles’, firmly putting her on the map as an artist to watch. Later in the year she was handpicked to perform at Ólafur Arnalds’ OPIA launch event - where it was announced Sofi will be the first signing to his OPIA label.

She will perform a handful of showcases in 2024, further info TBA - including the next big OPIA Festival in TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht - June 2, 2024, alongside Kiasmos, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Portico Quartet, Kelly Lee Owens and more. 

In "Por qué” Sofi grapples with the profound loss of a loved one. The intersection of the delicate piano, dark synthesizers, and haunting vocals in her native Spanish creates a unique and emotionally charged sonic landscape. This fusion serves as the backdrop for a poignant exploration of grief, taking listeners on a journey from darkness to light. 

The thematic core of the album resonates with the idea that strength emerges from difficult and lonely processes. Each track in Silent Stories becomes a chapter in Sofi's personal narrative, inviting listeners to connect with their own vulnerabilities and experiences. Through her music, Sofi aims to create a space where others can find solace and understanding in the complex interplay of emotions that define the human condition.

The upcoming album, Silent Stories delves into the complex range of human emotions. It captures the simultaneous existence of happiness and sadness, love and fear, hopefulness and grief. Sofi, like many before her, uses her art to navigate these intricate emotions. The album is a testament to the shared human experience, with Sofi baring her most vulnerable self through music and storytelling.

Within each of us lies a unique story —a collection of inner struggles that we conceal, silent battles that can often go unnoticed. These challenges subtly infiltrate our lives, yet they never deter us from pressing forward. Somehow, we discover the resilience to continue, repeatedly finding the strength to keep on going.

Over the past three years, I've dedicated myself to crafting this album. The stories within these songs unfolded slowly, witnessing the numerous changes I have faced and many different landscapes. Now, these songs are ready.
