BABX

Biographie

Born into a family of artists and musicians, David Babin began learning the piano at the age of five. Following his first approach to the stage as a member of the polyphonic troupe “Glotte trotteurs”, he composed his first performance music at the age of seventeen for a performance by the company ‘L'Herbe tendre’ around the texts of Roland Topor. In the early 2000s, he wrote his first songs and gave his first concerts. He opts for the pseudonym "Babx", inspired by an ephemeral movement imagined by plastic artist Laurent Allaire. He crosses paths with two characters who accompany him to this day in most of his projects: sound engineer Jérôme Pouloin and double bass player Sébastien Gastine. With them, he created Karbaoui Records, a record company, in order to bring to life the musical ideas of the team.

From 2002 to 2005, they gradually recorded what would become Babx's first album. The first album, Silicone Baby, was released in 2006 on Warner Records. In the process, the album was nominated for the Victoires de la musique in the category "Revelation album of the year". A Tour of more than eighteen months followed and a concert at the Théâtre des Bouffes-du-Nord in Paris. Two other events punctuate the year 2006: the takeover of the Sofreson studio, which becomes Studio Pigalle and will henceforth be the location chosen by Babx and his team to produce all their productions; then the realization of a maxi of a few songs for a young singer, Raphaëlle Lannadère, whose pseudonym is L.

In 2008, he recorded his second album, Cristal Ballroom, with the participation of New York guitarist Marc Ribot. With this album, the artist made important encounters: the American sound engineer Oz Fritz with whom he began a lasting relationship, and the photographer Harry Gruyaert (Magnum), one of the photos of whom adorns the cover of Cristal Ballroom. The album was released in 2009, followed by a tour during which crystallized the group that accompanied the singer on stage (Frédéric Jean, Antoine Montgaudon and Grégory Dargent). Armel Hostiou directed several clips from the album and joined the singer's team. The same year, he returned to performing music, with the premiere of Noctiluque by Japanese dancer Kaori Ito at the Vidy theater in Lausanne.

In 2010, he produced two albums, the eponymous album by Camélia Jordana and Initiale by singer L. The first was a huge success in 2010 (platinum record, nomination for victories), while the second was a 'gold and unanimously considered one of the albums of the year 2011. His collaboration with Camélia Jordana continued in 2011, when he and his group accompanied her on tour. The same year, he joined Thomas de Pourquery to organize the Brain Festival: a collective musical moment for the benefit of the fight against neurodegenerative diseases to which Oxmo Puccino, Jacques Higelin, Poni Hoax, The Dø, Camélia Jordana and L. participated.

In 2012, he joined the Cinq7 catalog (Dominique A, Albin de la Simone, Bertrand Belin, Oxmo Puccino, The Dø) and in 2013 published his third album, Personal Drones. This album, with a more electronic tone than the previous ones, evokes the experiments of Laurie Anderson while remaining faithful to an organic form. During the recording, he invites a new generation of musicians to join him, including Jeanne Added, Thomas de Pourquery, Arnaud Roulin (Poni Hoax) and Pamelia Kurstin. When the album was mixed in the United States with Oz Fritz, he met the members of the Metropolis Ensemble and began an artistic collaboration with them. He composed his first pieces, inspired by the work and life of the Serbian engineer and genius Nikola Tesla. On the release of the album Drones Personnels in 2013, several tracks enjoyed a great radio career (“I never liked you”, “Naomi loves”). A review of Liberation speaks of "a funny and serious being (…) with something that stuck you on the spot". The tour following the release concludes with a concert at the Parisian venue 104.

In 2014, he produced Camélia Jordana's second album, Dans la peau. In October of the same year, the cultural event Nuit Blanche commissioned him, on the occasion of the reopening of the Picasso Museum, for a performance combining music and image projections. The performance is titled Tambors. The same year, he created his independent production company, BisonBison, to carry out his projects and those of other artists. The first production of the Bison Bison label is Cristal Automatique, a project of musical setting of texts by Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, Jean Genet, Tom Waits or Gaston Miron in particular (project at the Correspondances de Manosque, from 2009). Cristal Automatique was released on April 22, 2015 in the form of a numbered object, printed in 350 copies with illustrations by Laurent Hilaire. The digipack version is released on June 22 and distributed by L’Autre Distribution. Second album produced under his label, Ascensions was released in 2017, the three-part track Omaya is dedicated to Iraqi fighter Omaya Al-Jbara ; he is accompanied by Archie Shepp and Dorothée Munyaneza. This same piece is released as a 45-rpm vinyl produced by Radio France.
